Hi Friends! Happy Wednesday. I am back today with a new book review. I recently finished The Lost Apothecary & The Magpie Society One For Sorrow. Today’s review will mostly be focused on The Magpie Society but will also briefly touch on the TLA. As always before we jump in how are you all? I mentioned in my last post I had quite the COVID scare but luckily came out not infected with the virus. So I am feeling relieved beyond measure for that. I am currently focusing much of my time and efforts on finding my next job as well and my bookstagram. Do let me know how you all are!

The Magpie Society ‘One for Sorrow’ by Zoe Sugg & Amy McCulloch gets 5 spoonfuls out of 5 🥄. In case you’re new to my reviews, my bookstagram is @spoonfulsofcozy and how I review books is with spoonfuls instead of stars! It’s just my personalized way of rating the books I read 🙂
Onto the book, I didn’t want to finish it that is how much I enjoyed this book. I am also not so patiently waiting for the sequel! I switched from reading a physical copy as well as listening to the audiobook and highly recommend listening to it. I thought the narration was so fun because it switched between the 2 main characters Ivy and Audrey. I do want to add that although I ended up loving it, I was unsure if I would when I first decided to pick it up. I am usually a cozy romance reader and not usually into mystery thrillers. But if you are too don’t let that turn you away from this book! It absolutely sucks you in and is a page turner.
It takes place at a boarding school called Illumen Hall tucked away on the English Shore. But this school isn’t like others of its kind as it is marked with tragedy and equip with a long lost society. At the years end party a girl is found dead with a huge Magpie tattoo on her back. Alone and no suicide note left, police and investigators rule it death by misadventure… but friends and family of the girl who died don’t believe that conclusion is accurate. As the students arrive back for the new school year a mysterious podcast shows up too with the intent of finding Lola’s killer. Follow unlikely friends Ivy and Audrey as they try to get to the bottom of what really happened to Lola and if it was at the hands of the elusive Magpie Society that has been around throughout Illumen Hall’s dark history.
I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see where the next one takes us. I also wish I would have read it during October when it was published because it would have absolutely been a perfect spooky autumn thriller!
To wrap this up I wanted to quickly touch on The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. I meant to write a review of this book as well as I finished it before the Magpie Society but life/time got away from me. It is a historical fiction /mystery and my god did I enjoy this one too. This book flips between the 1800’s in london to present day london and I adored that historical context. It’s a tail of a women apothecary that turned heart break and deceit into a business of poison interwoven with a story of a present day woman hurt by her cheating husband who then flees to London for answers. How are theses two women’s stories linked? You’ll have to grab a copy for yourself to find out. This book is a must read in my opinion and I also give it 5 spoonfuls out of 5 🥄✨.
Happy Reading bookworms,
M
